Description
Should you attend? This is a knowledge base educational program activity for Pharmacists.
Activity Description: Pharmacists in all settings should be familiar with the incidence of true penicillin allergies, and the types of reactions that are truly IgE mediated. Pharmacists are in a unique position to be able to discuss allergic reactions with patients and come up with a therapeutic plan based on the allergies. Pharmacists in most states can also perform penicillin skin testing (PST) which can help reduce the number of patients with reported penicillin allergies, but who actually are not allergic. Studies have documented worse patient outcomes when patients are not treated with first line (often beta-lactam) antibiotics. This activity will inform pharmacists about penicillin allergies, skin testing, and the importance of evaluating the patient.
Upon completion of the educational program, pharmacists will be able to:
- Review physiology of penicillin allergies in humans
- Determine likelihood of an allergic reaction based on cross-sensitivity of antibiotic side-chains.
- Discuss implications of penicillin allergies on patient care
- Identify opportunities for penicillin skin testing (PST)
